TP-Link Archer 8 Ultra and Deco 8 Ultra: Wi-Fi 8 Specs and Release Dates

TP-Link’s first consumer Wi-Fi 8 routers promise up to 19–22Gbps aggregate wireless capacity, but IEEE 802.11bn is unfinished and client support is scarce.

TP-Link used IFA week to announce the Archer 8 Ultra router and Deco 8 Ultra mesh system, its first consumer products built around the developing Wi-Fi 8/IEEE 802.11bn generation. Archer 8 Ultra preorders are scheduled to begin September 30 in selected regions, while Deco 8 Ultra and a broader Roam 8, extender and adapter roadmap follow during 2027.

The launch figures are intentionally enormous: roughly 19Gbps aggregate wireless capacity for Archer and up to 22Gbps in some Deco market materials, plus 10Gbps wired connectivity, large coverage claims and support for hundreds of devices. None is a promise that one laptop downloads at 19Gbps.

The standard is not final, prices were not confirmed at announcement and ordinary Wi-Fi 8 clients are virtually absent. Most households should treat these products as a technology preview and buy a mature Wi-Fi 7 system only when their present network has a real problem.

What TP-Link Announced and When

Archer 8 Ultra is the standalone flagship, with an unconventional enclosure, many internal antennas and high-speed Ethernet. Deco 8 Ultra packages the technology as a mesh for larger homes. TP-Link also previewed Roam 8 and adapters, indicating that 2027—not late 2026—is when an ecosystem may begin to exist.

A September 30 preorder date is not a universal ship date. TP-Link says selected regions, and capacities or certifications may differ. A listing without an MSRP should not be filled with an estimate. Buyers should wait for a local retail page showing price, warranty, return period and supported power supply.

Why 19Gbps Does Not Mean a 19Gbps Speed Test

Router companies add the maximum theoretical PHY rates of multiple 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz radios to create an aggregate class number. One client connects over one practical link, uses a limited number of spatial streams and loses capacity to protocol overhead, interference and distance. Internet speed is also capped by the ISP plan and modem.

The aggregate number can still matter when many clients and mesh backhaul share a system, but it is capacity—not a single-flow promise. A 10GbE port is useful for a fast NAS or multi-gig fiber only if the rest of the network, cable and client can match it.

Coverage figures are not floor plans

Manufacturer square-foot estimates assume favorable placement. Concrete, foil insulation, neighboring networks, floors and plumbing can reduce range dramatically.

What Wi-Fi 8 Is Trying to Improve

Wi-Fi 8 is expected to emphasize reliable performance, latency, coordination and behavior at the edge of coverage rather than merely chasing a new top speed. TP-Link groups its implementation under StabilityEngine and references developing techniques such as more flexible resource allocation and coordinated operation.

Those mechanisms need support in the access point, client and final standard. A current phone cannot gain a new Wi-Fi radio through a router upgrade. Some improvements may help mixed networks indirectly, but the clearest benefits require Wi-Fi 8 client silicon and mature firmware.

Draft-Standard Risk

IEEE 802.11bn work is ongoing, with finalization expected later than these first devices. Vendors can build against drafts and later update firmware, but not every change is software-only. Certification programs, interoperability and regulatory approvals can lag the first announcement.

Early hardware may work perfectly as a high-end Wi-Fi 7-compatible router while only partially delivering future Wi-Fi 8 features. Buy it only if that fallback value justifies the eventual price. Never assume a roadmap item or draft feature will be enabled in every country.

Archer is better when one central router covers the home and several multi-gig wired devices need ports. Deco is designed for difficult layouts, but mesh hops can consume wireless capacity unless dedicated/backhauled effectively. Ethernet backhaul remains the most predictable option when cabling is possible.

Who Might Buy Early?

A network developer, interoperability tester or enthusiast with multi-gig broadband and a willingness to troubleshoot may have a reason. A creator moving huge local files could also value 10GbE regardless of Wi-Fi 8. Everyone should verify VLANs, VPN, parental controls, security updates and subscription requirements; radio novelty does not replace router fundamentals.

A normal household with 300Mbps broadband, Wi-Fi 6 phones and good coverage will see little. Put money into access-point placement, Ethernet, a better modem or a proven Wi-Fi 7 mesh. Waiting brings more clients, completed standards work, competitive prices and firmware maturity.

  • Decide whether you need one router, mesh or wired access points.

Do not preorder simply for “Wi-Fi 8.” Archer 8 Ultra is a credible preview and Deco’s roadmap is ambitious, but the standard, clients and pricing are not ready for mainstream value. Most buyers should wait.

When Waiting Is the Better Upgrade

Wait if current coverage is reliable, important devices are Wi-Fi 6/6E, the home has gigabit-or-slower internet, or wired backhaul is not possible. A mature Wi-Fi 7 mesh bought at a discount can deliver multi-link features and broad client compatibility without paying an early Wi-Fi 8 premium. The savings may fund Ethernet installation, which improves every access-point generation.

Buy early only for a defined test environment, unusually congested network or replacement that cannot be delayed. Require a strong return policy, documented security-update period and stable performance with today’s clients. Do not value promised 2027 adapters as if they are included at launch. A router should be excellent before future devices arrive, including during ordinary mixed-client use.
