How TAKE encryption works

  1. Video receives a rotating encryption key. Ring describes the keys as unique and rotating rather than one permanent account key.
  2. A temporary copy enters a secure cloud enclave. Ring says this controlled environment releases access only under limited conditions.
  3. Enabled smart functions process the video. Features such as Smart Alerts need access to analyse what the camera recorded.

The Verge’s technical reporting says keys rotate for approximately five-minute sections of footage and Ring’s temporary copy is discarded within 24 hours. The report also notes that Ring may receive access again when a customer requests older footage. That distinction matters: TAKE narrows the access period but does not mathematically prevent Ring from ever obtaining a usable key.

E2EE is preferable when preventing service-provider access is the priority. TAKE is the more convenient compromise for households that rely on person, package or motion classification, shared household access and other connected features.

What does TAKE mean for privacy and legal requests?

Once Ring no longer retains a usable key, it says the company cannot provide intelligible video from that protected period using a copy it no longer has.
